I hate shopping but on occasion it's necessary.
Why was it necessary this time?
Well, my daughter has chess class at 1pm till 2pm every Sunday. After dropping her off at class I had 1 hour to kill.
I wanted the hour to be productive, so I was brainstorming what I could do with a free hour. Yes, I should have thought about this before but even the most introverted of men are subject to the occasional spontaneous venture. (I know, the horror...) 19 minutes of brainstorming later, I realized we don't even have a chess board!
2 mins of Google map searching later I find the closest store is target and is 9 minutes away. But will I have enough time to drive to the store, find and buy the chess board, and then drive back without being late?
The time is 1:21pm…and I think…screw it, challenge accepted.
I arrive at target at 1:30pm.
I groan at the full parking lot at 1:31pm.
I park and exit my car at 1:32pm.
I enter target at 1:33pm.
I debate at either getting the $40 set or the $24 set. I decied on the $24 set, naturally.
I power walk to the cashier at 1:36 pm.
I get stopped by someone asking if I play chess and I respond, "Yes." An awkward moment later they say they used to play chess but haven't in a while. Knowing I am on a time crunch I say, "Oh".
Another awkward moment later we say, well nice meeting you and I proceed to checkout. The time is 1:38.
I check out and make it to my car at 1:40pm.
I get back to my daughter's chess school at 1:48pm.
Success is mine! I wasted 21 minutes but still made use of a spare hour. All without being late to pickup my daughter.
At 2pm, I pick up my daughter and when we hop in the car I tell her I got her a chess board! To which she replies, don't we already have one on the computer?
Moral of the story? I hate shopping.
